The success of last year’s inaugural Photocentric day at CEPIC in London means the sequel in Barcelona is eagerly awaited

The annual CEPIC Conference  kicks off this week in Barcelona, running from June 11-14. Photocentric Day focuses on the professional photographer that begins with keynote speaker, photographer Benjamin Lowy, who was embedded with the US Army in Iraq in 2003. Lowy’s awards include World Press Photo, POYi, PDN, Communication Arts, American Photography, and the Society for Publication Design.

Needless to say Lowy’s spot is one of the highlights of Photocentric day. In 2011 his Iraq / Perspectives book was awarded the Duke University Center for Documentary Studies/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography. William Eggleston who selected the work said, “Benjamin’s work is an opportunity to see as an American soldier sees when in Iraq – nobody I know of has ever shown that, especially through night vision goggles.” When you see the work you see exactly what he means.

Dr. Kai Barthel professor of visual computing at HTW, University of Applied Sciences in Berlin and founder of Pixolution, will be talking on “Image Search 2.0 – Fusing visual and keyword image search.”

Chaired by Christina Vaughan of Image Source and CEPIC, and with a panel including Anthony Harris (COO Image Source) and Paul Foster (Senior Director, Creative Content, Getty Images) “the virtuous circle of professional quality” will prove an interesting topic for all creative professionals dismayed by the rise of “free”

The day concludes with two speakers from Microsoft’s Bing, Michael Kroll, principal UX (user experience) manager, and Stephanie Horstmanshof Senior Lead Content Manager opening the full CEPIC congress with “a visionary address on the opportunities for imagery today.” Anyone who has been pleasantly distracted by the interactive imagery on Bing’s homepage will be intrigued about Microsoft Bing’s thoughts on the future for images and image-makers.
